You will have a chance to try ice fishing and also there is an opportunity for those who like the adventure of catching fish with bare hands in the pool( optional). This experience is quite unique as Hwacheon is one of very few places in Korea where you can actually catch mountain trout fish called Sancheona with your bare-hands.
Recently, CNN introduced Korea’s Ice Festival as one of the 7 Wonders of Winter. This is the wonder of the Ice Festival. Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mount Trout) Ice Festival is quite famous for its fun programs: ice fishing for which you make a hole in the ice; lure fishing where you throw your fishing rod; and, bare-hand fish-grabbing.
Wearing only shorts and T-shirts and get into into the icy cold water trying to grab Sancheoneo fish with their bare hands is one of well known activities. Both bystanders who watch and those who wrestle with live Sancheoneo as well as the cold weather experience the thrill of winter. In the course of time, you can see yours and others’ breath as you all burst into laughter.
The thing you cannot afford to miss in the Sancheoneo Ice Festival is the taste of Sancheoneo. Grabbed or lured, you can eat raw or grilled mountain trout and which way you eat it will be delicious. You can catch a maximum of 3 fishes.
We will stay and catch at foreign tourist only fishing zone which means that it will be less busier compared with full of Koreans at other places! It means there are many more fishes in that area. You definitely will be able enjoy the experience of your lifetime when catching a fish in a ice hole! And you can truly enjoy the exciting feeling of walking on the ice in the river.
You can take photos of huge snow sculptures displayed at the festival scene and you can even try entering some snow made objects put there. You can walk around enjoying various ice sculptures. It is going to be your life time experience while you are staying in Korea.
