Dec 28 Jogyesa Temple Tour & Temple food in a cozy restaruant

Hi everyone,

We are going to visit Jogyesa Temple and experience temple food called Balwoo Gingyang(발우 공양)in a gorgeous restaruant at the heart of Seoul.

Jogesa Temple is the center of Zen Buddhism in Korea, and is famous for being located in the city. The main temple building is about 500 years old. The Dancheong is particularly beautiful with all the different colors painted on it. We will have an English language guided tour with a guide from the temple.

Along the street around Jogyesa Temple are many Buddhist specialty shops, selling such things as prayer beads, Buddhist writings, incense, as well as souvenirs such as dolls and key chains. If you are interested in Buddhism, these stores may be worth looking around.
You will have a chance to experience temple food called Balwoo Gingyang(발우 공양) eaten by Budiihist monks and laities at temples throughout the country. The lunch you will have 10 dishes. In accordance with Buddhist tradition, all dishes are vegetarian; some ingredients change according to the season.

The heart of the meal is the gongyang—for rice, soup and side dishes (on a cultural note, at temples, the gongyang usually consists of four bowls—a rice bowl, soup bowl, side dish bowl and water bowl). Some of the dishes served are truly spectacular—particularly aesthetic is the yeongwachae (which comes with the 10-dish “Enlightenment” meal), an entire lotus blossom topped with a variety of vegetarian goodies. The rice, too, is served wrapped in a lotus leaf—a very nice touch.
